Country music gives CBS another winning week in ratings

NEW YORK - It was a good TV week for country music; not so hot for sinking ships.

CBS hit the ratings top 10 with the Country Music Association awards show in New York City, although the 17.7 million viewers was down from last year's 18.4 million.

Another CBS special on the music of Johnny Cash, coinciding with release of the film biography "Walk the Line," won its time slot with 12.5 million viewers last Wednesday.

NBC's three-hour remake of "The Poseidon Adventure" on Sunday failed to entice many viewers away from "Desperate Housewives" or other fare. Its average of 9.6 million viewers ranked below CBS's movie, "Snow Wonder."

CBS's "60 Minutes" profiled the rock band U2 and scored its highest ratings in a year.

Otherwise, the Nielsen ratings held pretty much to form. CBS, which hasn't lost a week this season, averaged 15.2 million viewers (9.9 rating, 16 share) and also won among viewers aged 18 to 49 years old. ABC averaged 11.7 million viewers (7.4, 12), NBC had 9.6 million (6.4, 10), Fox had 7 million (4.3, 7), UPN had 4.2 million (2.7, 4), the WB had 3.8 million (2.5, 4) and Pax TV had 700,000 (0.5, 1).

After months where the loss of Peter Jennings was not felt in the evening news ratings competition, ABC's "World News Tonight" seems to be losing ground. NBC's "Nightly News" averaged 10.3 million viewers (7.3 rating, 14 share), "World News Tonight" had 9 million (6.2, 12) and the "CBS Evening News" had 7.9 million (5.6, 11).

A ratings point represents 1,102,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 110.2 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
