Thanksgiving meal

A community Thanksgiving Day dinner will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday in The Alley, Aiken. Turkey will be served, and beverages and utensils will be provided. Attendees are urged to bring a covered dish. There will be gospel music at the event. Call 649-9773 or 642-7664.

Chitlin' Strut

The 40th annual Chitlin' Strut will be Friday and Saturday at the Salley Civic Center fairgrounds, 258 Pine St. N.W., Salley. The carnival will run from 3 to 10 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Other attractions include a gospel concert at 7 p.m. Friday, and Saturday features a parade at 10 a.m. and the band Anybody's Guess between noon and 5 p.m. Food and craft vendors will be on hand, and a London film crew will be filming the event. A tree-lighting ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Newberry Street Festival Center, 100 block of Newberry Street. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh will light the city Christmas tree, Christmas carols will be sung, Santa will make an appearance and refreshments will be provided. Call (803) 649-2221.

Holiday kickoff

Downtown Aiken will hold its annual holiday kickoff from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Activities include concerts, free pictures with Santa at the Aiken Center for the Arts, and camel rides in the public parking lot on Richland Avenue. Call 649-2221.

Christmas concert

The Aiken Community Band will hold its Christmas concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at the Etherredge Center Concert Hall at the University of South Carolina Aiken, 471 University Parkway. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and children. Tickets can be purchased at the Etherredge Center Box office in advance or at the door. Call (803)641-3305.

School board meets

The Aiken County school board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Oakwood Windsor Elementary School, 3773 Charleston Highway, Aiken. Call 641-2720.

'Mikado' auditions

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of South Carolina Aiken will hold auditions for The Mikado at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, and Thursday, Dec. 1, on the main stage at the University of South Carolina Aiken Etherredge Center, 471 University Parkway. Five males and four females and a chorus, ages 17-60, are needed. Those auditioning should prepare a ballad from a musical or English art song and be prepared to do a cold reading from a script. Benefit concert

A Christmas benefit concert, sponsored by the Harmony River Chorus of Sweet Adelines International, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at the North Augusta High School auditorium, 2000 Knobcone Ave. The concert also will feature the Greenbrier Elementary School choir and North Augusta High's Wings. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Proceeds benefit the National Foundation for Transplants. Call 613-1649.

Club for children

Brothers and Sisters of Aiken County meets from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays at the Aiken County Recreation Center, U.S. Highway 1 in Graniteville. The meetings, led by Addie Ross, include guest speakers, field trips and games. The free program is for ages 5-18. Call 663-6142.
