LINCOLNTON, Ga. - Mr. Harry Cantey Stewart, Jr., 90, of Elm Street entered into rest on Monday, November 21, 2005 at University Hospital, Augusta. The funeral service will be Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Lincolnton United Methodist Church with Dr. Harry Ross Workman and Rev. John W. Pike, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Lincolnton City Cemetery. Mr. Stewart was born November 7, 1915 and was married to the late Frances Elizabeth Wright for 56 years. He served his country as a Merchant Marine and attended Mercer University, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and retired after a long career of service with the Georgia Department of Labor and was a distinguished community leader having been a founder of the Central Savannah River Area Development Center, serving on its Board of Directors from 1961-1966, chairman of the Lincoln County Board of Education from 1955 through 1956, and Mayor of the City of Lincolnton from1961 through 1966. He was a longtime supporter of the Lincoln County School athletic program particularly the football team having served for many years as the "Voice of the Red Devils" as the teams stadium announcer. He was a Shriner, member of the Masonic Lodge #354, Woodmen of the World, helped establish the Boy Scout Council of Lincoln County and also a member of the Lincolnton United Methodist Church where he served for 20 years as Sunday School Superintendent and along with the late William Ivey, co-founded the Men's Club. Survivors include a daughter, Frances Stewart Upton and husband, Herbert Stanley Upton of Augusta; two grandchildren, Virginia Upton Rowland of Augusta and Herbert Stanley Upton, Jr. and wife, Rebecca Mason Upton of Cartersville, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Henry Clayton Rowland, Jr. and Herbert Stanley Upton, III and one sister, Mille Cantey Stewart of Macon, Ga. Pallbearers will be Wyatt Albea, Charles Estes, Billy Norman, Mike McCombs, Ben Ross, Neal Workman, Edward Turner and Bernie Guthrie. Honorary pallbearers will be Bart Bowers, Joe Bowles, Ward Rice and Brian Welsh. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lincolnton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 85, Lincolnton, Ga. 30817, University Health Care, 1350 Walton Way Augusta, Ga. 30901 or Easter Seal of East Georgia, 1241 Reynolds St. Augusta, Ga. 30901. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the residence and from 1 to 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday at Rees Funeral Home.
