Just do as they say?

Former President Jimmy Carter, noted historian Doris Kearn Goodwin, and so-called funnyman and social critic Al Franken are all making the talk-show rounds promoting their favorably reviewed new books.

But don't look for favorable reviews or free plugs from the mainstream elites for the book that zoomed to the top of Amazon.com's best-seller list last weekend. Why? Because Do as I Say (Not as I Do) by Peter Schweizer blows the whistle on liberal hypocrisy.

The Hoover Institution research fellow got sick of liberals' beating the drums over conservative hypocrisy - moralist Bill Bennett's high-stakes gambling, radio talk-show star Rush Limbaugh's prescription drug problem, televangelist Pat Robertson putting his foot in his mouth - so he decided to research hypocrisy on the left. What Schweizer found can only be described as stunning:

- Far-left billionaire Bush-basher George Soros has not only spent tens of millions of dollars to defeat the president and his tax-cut proposals, but has actually called for higher taxes "on the wealthy." Well, why not? The bulk of Soros' billions are held in tax-free accounts in places like Curacao and the Cayman Islands.

- U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., fierce advocate for retaining the estate tax and foe of tax shelters, shields most of his family fortune from taxes with a complex web of trusts, private foundations and off-shore investments. Teddy's just another politician being for taxes he doesn't have to pay.

- Bill and Hillary Clinton also defend the estate tax - indeed, as president he vetoed a bill that repealed it - but they have now set up a contract trust that will sharply reduce their estate tax.

When it comes to taxes, liberals' refrain is, "Don't tax you, don't tax me, tax that man behind the tree." Guess what: You're the guy behind the tree.

The hypocrisy isn't limited to taxes. Schweizer found that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., champion of private- and public-sector labor unions, co-owns a host of non-union businesses; propagandist Michael Moore, scourge of big business and multinational corporations, is heavily invested in Halliburton; Al Franken, who constantly lip-lashes conservatives as "racists" for opposing affirmative action, has hired more than 100 people over the past 15 years - only one of them an African-American.

Liberals condemn the hypocrisy they perceive in others, but in typical hypocritical fashion they have a huge blind spot when it comes to their own hypocrisies. Schweizer shows, when it comes to hypocrisy, the left doesn't have to take a back seat to anyone.
