Clemson needs to hire 300 faculty in 5 years

CLEMSON - Clemson University says it needs to hire 300 faculty members in the next five years.

While university officials say it is a historic opportunity for the research institution, Clemson will be competing for talent with other colleges entering similar increased hiring periods. Most of the vacancies are the result of retirements.

The Clemson Department of Biological Sciences, which is losing half its faculty, is turning to working scientists to fill faculty slots.

The combined annual salary of the retiring professors is $31.4 million, according to the Office of Institutional Research.

But replacing retiring professors with new ones is not a dollar-for-dollar proposition. Universities often give new professors $150,000 to $200,000 in initial research funding and laboratory equipment.
