Outdoors calendar

NOTE: All the listed events are open to the public, although membership in some organizations might be required.

Today: The Carolina Star Gun and Hunt Club's Women's Pistol Shooting Group will meet at 2 p.m. The group is open to all levels of shooters. Basic instruction and recreational shooting are emphasized. TUESDAY: A Hunting Heritage Banquet, held by the Edgefield Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, will be held at the Edgefield Gym at 6 p.m. Call (803) 637-3106 for more details.

TUESDAY: The Sierra Club's Savannah River chapter meets at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Walton Way Extension. Rob Thornhill will present a program on "Earthwatch and Florida's Endangered Sea Turtles." The public is welcome. Contact Judy Gordon at 650-8314 for details.

WEDNESDAY: "Fire on the Landscape" will be the theme for the second annual meeting of the South Carolina Prescribed Fire Council at Riverbanks Botanical Gardens in Columbia. THURSDAY: The Fort Gordon Sportsman's Club meets the third Thursday night of each month at 6 p.m. For more information call Fred Perry at 791-5078.

FRIDAY-SATURDAY: A primitive weapons hunt will be held at Bussey Point Wildlife Management Area at Thurmond Lake in Lincoln County. Limit is 100 hunters per day with muzzleloading weapons. Limit is two deer - one doe and one quality buck that must have at least four points on one side. Call (800) 533-3478, ext. 1159, for more details.

SATURDAY: A Concealed Weapon Permit class for South Carolina residents will be offered by Carolina Star Gun & Hunt Club to prepare the students for submitting an application for a South Carolina permit. Instruction, finger printing, photograph, a completed application and range qualification will be included. The classes will start at 8 a.m. The fee will be $60 per class. SATURDAY: A class in basic nature photography and composition will be hosted by Ed Belinski at 9 a.m. at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. Cost is $5 for members, $8 for non-members. Call (706) 828-2109 to register.
