Gerolstein, Pacers earn win in tourney

Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates needed little more than an hour to sweep aside USC Aiken, 3-0 in the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference tournament, to advance to today's title match at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Armstrong, the top seed in the tournament, beat the Pacers 30-18, 30-13, 30-22 to move to 22-11 on the season. USC Aiken's year comes to an end with a 16-14 overall record.

- Sophomore Mandy Gerolstein had 21 kills as No. 4 USC Aiken defeated UNC Pembroke, 3-1, in the opening round.

Amanda Timm also added 12 kills and Hayden Johnson had 24 digs for the Lady Pacers.

USC Upstate took the best of what Augusta State could throw at them early, then dominated as they swept their quarterfinal match, 30-25, 30-19, 30-16. Augusta State's year closes at 6-27.

- USC Aiken's Rachel Dalitz and Gerolstein have been selected to the Peach Belt All-Conference team.

Davenport loses, still clinches No. 1

In Los Angeles, Lindsay Davenport lost to Maria Sharapova at the WTA Championships, yet still won.

Davenport got help from Amelie Mauresmo, who beat Elena Dementieva, to clinch the year-end No. 1 ranking for the fourth time in her career.

By the time Mauresmo won 6-2, 6-3 just before 3 a.m. Thursday night, Davenport was already gone from Staples Center with her husband. But she left knowing that her top ranking was probably safe.

"It is great," she said. "A year ago, I wouldn't have thought it was possible."

Davenport brought a 155-point lead over No. 2 Kim Clijsters into this week, but the Belgian needed to make the semifinals to overtake Davenport. Clijsters had lost twice going into Friday's final round-robin match, and Mauresmo's victory ensured her elimination.

Davenport, Sharapova, Maures-mo and Mary Pierce advanced to today's semifinals of the season-ending tournament, being played for the last time in the United States before moving to Spain next year.

Sharapova beat Davenport, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, the 18-year-old Russian's first victory over a highly ranked player since July, when she defeated Nadia Petrova in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

Sharapova has been bothered by a strained right pectoral muscle since August.
