STATESBORO, Ga. - With the buzz of Georgia Southern's biggest win of the season still resonating throughout Paulson Stadium, linebacker John Mohring's statements turned out to be the team's theme of the week.
"Beating Furman won't mean anything unless we take care of business against Morehead State," he said.
Business against Morehead State begins today at 1 p.m. at Paulson Stadium.
The 10th-ranked Eagles (7-3, 5-2 Southern Conference) will be looking for their fourth consecutive win and seventh in the past eight games.
But more importantly, Georgia Southern is looking to impress the Division I-AA playoff committee, which will announce the 16-team postseason field Nov. 20.
The Eagles are off next week, but they'll be scoreboard watching. A Georgia Southern win and an Appalachian State loss to either Western Carolina (today) or at Elon (the week after) would give the Eagles a share of the conference title.
Morehead State (8-2, 3-0) won the Southern Division of the Pioneer Football League and will play San Diego for the conference title on Nov. 19.
"They do run some option, so our scout team should be able to assimilate what they're doing offensively," Georgia Southern coach Mike Sewak said.
But Sewak won't be able to assimilate Morehead's perseverance. Last week, Morehead State trailed Missouri-Rolla 35-3 before posting a 56-55 victory.
Morehead probably can't assimilate Georgia Southern's offense very well. The Eagles lead Division I-AA in rushing offense with 382.2 yards per game and are sixth in total offense (461.2 yards per game) and 14th in scoring (35.8 points).
Georgia Southern is led by Jayson Foster and Jermaine Austin, who are both on a roll.
Foster has rushed for 1,282 yards this season, and Austin has 1,281.
"Bottom line, (Georgia Southern) has the best one-two punch in college football," Furman coach Bobby Lamb said.
