AIKEN, S.C. - Mrs. Barbara Rutherford Knowles, 83, died Sunday morning, November 6, 2005 at her residence in Aiken where she had lived since 1950. A memorial service will be at 4:00 PM Sunday, November 13, 2005 at the Green Boundary Club in Aiken. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Board of Governors of the Green Boundary Club. Mrs. Knowles was born June 14, 1922 in New York, NY and grew up in Aiken and Allamuchy, NJ. She was a daughter of Winthrop C. Rutherfurd, a well-known breeder of smooth-haired fox terriers, and Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd. She graduated from Aiken Day School and the Fermata School, later serving as a board member of the Aiken Day School. She became a trustee emeritus of the Aiken Preparatory School after the two schools merged. Mrs. Knowles was one of the founders of the Green Boundary Club. She served for many years as president of the club and became President Emeritus in 2004. She was an avid bridge player, croquet player and accomplished golfer. She and her late husband, local golf legend, Robert Winthrop "Bobby" Knowles, Jr. were the organizers of the Knowles Bowl at the Palmetto Golf Club, an annual golf tournament originally benefiting Aiken Day School and Aiken Prep School, and then later benefiting the Hitchcock Foundation. She was also a Red Cross volunteer during World War II. She was highly regarded in the Aiken community, and repeatedly described by those who know her as a very charming and elegant lady. Survivors include a daughter Lucy, and her two sons, Kit and Martin, daughter Alice, all of Aiken, and two brothers, Hugo Rutherfurd of Aiken and Guy Rutherfurd of New York, NY.
