Sports rants

SINCE SPECTATORS AND news media can call penalties on golfers a day or so later after the infraction, should people watching other sports on TV be allowed to quarterback plays and phone them in and have football, baseball, soccer, etc. games overturned on penalties they spotted? Sounds fair to me if they can do it in golf.

I WONDER (IF) Ben Walker of The Associated Press would make a study on how many blacks are in football, what percent, and what percent of the basketball players is black rather than worry about what percent of blacks is in the World Series. If he wants to make a comparison, let him do it equally between all sports.

WHO EVER SAID the Gamecocks would be contenders for the SEC title this year? Gamecock fans already knew this season would be ONLY a building year for Steve Spurrier's style of play. A couple of more years of the good recruiting, along with our improving effort, and the "Dawgs" will be the ones saying "wait till next year." Thats what we're exited about.

Can you say overrated? The only team Georgia has beat with a winning record is South Carolina.

SO MUCH FOR The Chronicle's poll with 65 percent saying Georgia would beat the Gators. Georgia just lost to the worst Florida team they will face for the next 10 years. Dogs, you better get use to it - how does 2-for-24 sound to you? Let's be kind, 3-for-24, Georgia should win once every 10 years. Good luck with Auburn and "bow-wow," y'all.

I GOT A charge out of Scripps Howard writer Ray McNulty (Irish?) complaining about an official's call that went against Notre Dame in the game with Southern Cal. I have been living for 70 years with the fact that most questionable calls go in favor of the "chosen ones" from South Bend. This was a rare exception.
