Jaguars in eighth at Carpet Capital
In Rocky Face, Ga., Augusta State's men's golf team carded 9-over 297 on Friday, putting them in eighth place after the first round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
Freshman Stephen Swanepoel paced the No. 15 Jags with an even-par 72, good for a tie for 14th individually. Junior Major Manning is one shot back of Swanepoel at The Farm Golf Club.
Florida leads the tournament at 6-under-par 282, Georgia State (280) is second and Georgia (289) sits in fourth.

Judge asked to seal settlement amount
In Birmingham, Ala., Time Inc. has asked a judge to bar reporters from seeing its defamation settlement with Mike Price, arguing copycat suits could follow if public figures find out how much it agreed to pay the fired Alabama football coach over an unflattering Sports Illustrated story.
Price is now the head coach at the University of Texas at El Paso.
- In Columbia, the University of South Carolina has partnered with Paciolan Systems Inc. to bring its ticket operations for athletic events on-line.
The deal will let the school's athletic ticket office offer renewals, season and single-game tickets by using the Internet.

Lady Jaguars drop season's first game
In Lake Buena Vista, Fla., the Augusta State women got off on the wrong foot, opening the season with a 71-49 loss to Nebraska-Omaha.
The Mavericks (1-0) led 37-19 at the half of the first game of Disney's Division II Women's Tip-Off Classic. Junior Alena Batovska led the Lady Jags (0-1) with 10 points, and Shirrell Ford had five rebounds.
- In Athens, Ga., top recruit Angel Robinson won't play this season for the Georgia women's basketball team because of an injury to her left knee.
Coach Andy Landers said Robinson, the 2005 Miss Georgia Basketball, tore an anterior cruciate ligament during the Lady Bulldogs' exhibition game against Augusta State on Tuesday.
- In Philadelphia, a jury acquitted two former La Salle basketball players, Gary Neal and Michael Cleaves, of rape, discounting prosecutors' contention that the woman involved was too drunk to consent to sex.

Deardorff, Pacers play way to sweep
Sophomore Missy Deardorff had 13 kills, eight digs and two blocks leading USC Aiken (15-12, 7-4 Peach Belt Conference) to a 3-0 conference sweep over UNC Pembroke. Game scores were 30-27, 30-22 and 30-20.
- Freshman Emily Joye paced Augusta State with 12 kills and five blocks, but the Lady Jaguars were unable to contain the Francis Marion offensive, losing 3-0. Game scores were 30-12, 30-21, 30-28.

Roddick tops Ferrer in Paris quarters
In Paris, top-seeded Andy Roddick dropped serve for the first time since September, but saved two match points in a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8) victory Friday over Spaniard David Ferrer in the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters.

DaCosta named to all-conference team
USC Aiken's Natasha DaCosta has been named to the 2005 Peach Belt Conference All-Conference women's team.
DaCosta was first on the Lady Pacers in assists (three), second in points (nine) and goals (three).
High School Tennis
Freeman selected to all-region team
Augusta Christian's Jennie Freeman was named to the all-region tennis team for the South Carolina Independent Schools Association Class AAA.
Freeman is a sophomore from North Augusta.
