FORT WORTH, Texas - Ryan Newman won the pole for Sunday's Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway with his first lap of 192.947 mph. During his second lap, however, his Alltel Dodge slammed into the fourth-turn wall.
The car was severely damaged, forcing his team to use a back-up car in Sunday's main event (3:50 p.m., NBC-Ch. 26). But under NASCAR's quirky rules, Newman will be regarded as the pole winner although he will be forced to start last.
Newman now has 35 pole wins in his career.
Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth, Joe Nemechek and Jeremy Mayfield rounded out the top five.
