Augusta's Riddle gets call-up

The Augusta Lynx have no official affiliation with any American Hockey League teams, but Tuesday, they lost their second player in less than a week to a call-up.

The Portland Pirates called up left wing Jake Riddle on Tuesday, while goaltender Seamus Kotyk has been up with the Houston Aeros for the past week.

Riddle had one goal and a pair of assists in the Lynx's first five games. He began the season with Portland, attempting two shots in one game, before being assigned to Augusta on Oct. 14.

Coach Bob Ferguson said Tuesday afternoon that he wasn't sure who would replace Riddle on the line with center Ryan Lang and right wing Sam Ftorek, but he was leaning toward Brian Passmore or Joe Pereira.

"It's an opportunity for somebody to step up and prove themselves," Ferguson said.

Passmore leads the team with five points (two goals, three assists) as a center, but Ferguson said his left-handed shot would enable him to fill Riddle's spot on the wing. Passmore has notched a point in all but one of the Lynx's games. He had 12 points in 56 games for Augusta last season.

Pereira just came off injured reserve before Saturday's game against Pensacola and scored the game-winning goal with less than 7 minutes left in the third period.

Ferguson said the Pirates didn't specify how long they would need Riddle, just that they were short on forwards. They also called up Las Vegas forward Derek Edwardson, who has three goals in three games for the Wranglers.
