Grant recipient

Haley Mottel, a 2005 graduate of North Augusta High School and daughter of Phillip and Kim Mottel, of North Augusta, has received a $1,000 grant from The Comcast Foundation.

Military news

- Army Pfc. Adam J. Nettles, a 2005 graduate of Aiken High School and son of Lynn Nettles, of Aiken, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.

- Army Pvt. Robbie R. Voldness, son of Charles Voldness, of Aiken, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.

- Army Pvt. Maxwell P. Allgood, son of Pierce Allgood, of North Augusta, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.

- Marine Corps Pvt. Joseph Carter, a 2005 graduate of Midland Valley High School, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

- Air Force Lt. Col. George E. Forest, a native of North Augusta, has been decorated with the Bronze Star Medal for participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Miss Sassafras

Elizabeth Joyce Towles, a 13-year-old eighth-grader at North Augusta Middle School and daughter of David and Valerie Towles, of Beech Island, has been named Miss Sassafras 2005.

Sponsorship

Aiken Regional Medical Centers has donated $180,000 to University of South Carolina Aiken to sponsor a nursing faculty position for three years.

Aiken Tech

Three $1,000 scholarships have been awarded to Aiken Technical College Foundation by Duke Cogema Stone & Webster, a consortium contracted by the Department of Energy to design, construct and operate the mixed oxide facility at the Savannah River Site. The scholarships are earmarked for full-time students pursuing associate degrees in engineering and will be awarded for the Spring 2006 semester.
