Gerolstein selected as Player of Week

USC Aiken's Many Gerolstein was selected as the Peach Belt Conference's Player of the Week.

The 6-foot-1-inch sophomore led the Lady Pacers with 3.78 kills and 1.11 blocks per game.

It was Gerolstein's first selection for the honor and the 25th in the program's 15-year NCAA history.

"Mandy certainly did perform well this week," USC Aiken coach Will Condon said. "She had done a great job of minimizing her errors and taking what the defense gives her."

Lady Wildcat player collapses and dies

In Tucson, Ariz., Shawntinice Polk, a top women's basketball player at the University of Arizona, collapsed at the McKale Center on Monday and died, university officials said.

Polk wasn't working out or practicing when she collapsed around midmorning and was taken to University Medical Center, officials said.

Athletic director Jim Livengood said Polk wasn't feeling well when she arrived at the center, but he wouldn't elaborate.

He said the circumstances surrounding Polk's death were being reviewed.

Polk's body was taken to the Pima County Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy, a spokeswoman said

University President Peter Likins said Polk's teammates and other athletes were grieving.

"We lost a dear, dear friend in Shawntinice Polk this morning," Likins said.

"She was a beautiful, beautiful person whom I will cherish for the rest of my life," Likins said, his voice breaking.

Polk was an All-Pac-10 player three years in a row beginning with the 2002-03 season, and was the school's career leader in blocked shots (222) and double-doubles (46).
