HARTSELLE, Ala. - Funeral services for Retired Major Joe Loucious Berry, Sr., 59, of Hartselle, will bel held Saturday, September 24, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. at New Song Family Church on Highway 31 in Decatur with Rev. Billy Ray Young as eulogist, Rev. Les Jones officiating, and Reynold Funeral Home directing. Services with full military honors will be Monday, September 26, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. in Wrens, Ga. at Ways Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy McCullough, III officiating. Pallbearers in Decatur will be the deacons of Hartselle Missionary First Baptist Church and a military honor guard in Wrens, Ga. Mr. Berry was born May 4, 1946 to the late Richard Berry and Mary Lockhart Berry in Wrens, Ga. He was brother to eight siblings. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lula Mae Goodsen, and his brother, Earnest Calvin Berry. A graduate of the Jefferson County, Ga. school system, he earned a degree in Soils Science from Fort Valley State University,Fort Valley, Ga. He was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture, the Soil Conservation Service, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service until his retirement as District Conservationist for Madison County in 2003. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, Army Reserves and Army Corps of Engineers, retiring as a Major. Mr. Berry was a member of Hartselle First Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, Treasurer, Building Committee Chairman, Superintendent of Sunday School, Youth Director and Adult Educator for 15 years. He and his wife, Bertha Johnson Berry raised a son and two daughters. He served two terns on the Hartselle City Schools Board of Education. He was an active member and past President of the Hartselle Jaycees twice overs. He was also a Club Scout Leader and has been a coach for softball, baseball, basketball and football. Survivors include his wife, Bertha Berry; his son, Joe (Regina) Loucious Berry, Jr. of Anniston, Ala.;daughter, Daphne Berry of Madison and Stephanie Berry of Hartselle; granddaughter, Jeterria Salter of Jacksonville, Ala.; grandsons, Xavien Pearson of Lincoln, Ala., Eric Turner, Jr. of Hartselle, and Joe Loucious Berry, III of Anniston, Ala.; his mother, Mary Berry of Wrens, Ga.; sister, Dollie Roland and Mary Ann Avery, both of Wrens, Ga.; brothers, Richard (Fannie) Berry, Jr., John (Elizabeth) Berry, Thomas (Frances) Berry, and Jimmy Berry, all of Wrens, Ga., Henry (Ida) Berry of Atlanta, Ga.; two aunts, Lottie Way of Augusta, Ga. and Lelia Cebrooks of Wrens, Ga.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
