On final day, 2 more qualify for seat on school board

Friday, the final day of qualifying, produced two more candidates to fill Johnny Hatney's seat on the Richmond County school board.

Robert Howard, the assistant director of Augusta's Parks and Recreation Department, and the Rev. Robert Anderson, a Baptist minister, joined Realtor A.K. Hasan, who had already filed.

The Rev. Anderson, 64, has been a minster at various churches for 20 years and said he wants to focus on getting rid of exit exams, increasing vocational opportunities for pupils and school safety.

He's also concerned with test scores and dropout rates.

Mr. Hasan served on the school board from 1982 to 1986 and was later elected to the Augusta City Council.

Because the election is being held to fill the remainder of Dr. Hatney's term, it's important for someone with experience to take his place on the board, Mr. Hasan said.

Calls to Mr. Howard weren't returned as of press time.

The Super District 9 school board seat became vacant when Dr. Hatney qualified to run for a seat on the Augusta Commission. Super District 9 is comprised of districts 1, 2, 4 and 5.

The election will be held Nov. 8, and, if necessary, a runoff will be held Dec. 6.
