STATESBORO, Ga. - Mrs. Mary Riddle Chew, age 90, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility in Statesboro. Mrs. Chew was born in Riddleville, Washington County, Ga., in 1914, but lived most of her married life in Wadley and Bartow. She moved to Statesboro several years ago to live with her son. A former Bartow City Councilwoman and Mayor Pro-Tem, Mrs. Chew served more than 15 years on the city council. She operated Chew's Nursery and Landscaping in Bartow for 25 years. She was a landscape designer and was a frequent speaker at regional garden clubs. Mrs. Chew was active in her church and the Eastern Star, having served as Worthy Grand Matron of the Wadley/Bartow Chapter and District Grand Deputy. She enjoyed oil painting and was a long-time member of the Bartow Art Guild and was a regular participant in area art exhibits. Mrs. Chew was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Hudson Chew. Surviving are her sister, Frances G. Riddle Edson of Aurora, Colo.; three sons and daughters- in-law, Dr. Alex L. Chew of Statesboro, Frank E. Chew, Sr. and Dr. Catherine S. Chew of Aiken, S.C., William S. Chew and Sarah V. Grayson of Pawleys Island, S.C., Eleanor Rimedio of Tybee Island and Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.; a grandson, Frank E. Chew, Jr. of Atlanta; two great-grandsons; a special niece, Carole D. Adams of Atlanta; and a host of nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. The graveside service for Mrs. Chew will be held on Saturday at 12:00 noon, at the Riddleville Cemetery, Highway 242, Riddleville, Ga. Officiating will be Reverend G. Wade Dawson. Visitation and a reception will follow for family and friends in the Social Hall of the A.S. Page Memorial Baptist Church, which is across the street from the cemetery. The Mayor and present members of the Bartow City Council will serve as honorary pallbearers, as well as former councilmen who may have servedwith Mrs. Chew.
