River Island, a housing development designed to have minimum impact on the natural landscape, will be the focus of a much more traditional building ritual: the housing showcase.
The Builders Association of Metro Augusta is holding its annual Showcase of Homes today through Sunday and continues the following weekend.
Five homes will be open to the public.
Builders association President Jake Ivey said the showcase, which has been held nearly every year since 1989, will be the first at River Island, off Furys Ferry Road in Evans.
In addition to Mr. Ivey's own J.W. Ivey & Associates, Kevin R. Hefner Construction, Grizzly Construction, Holmes Construction & Development Co., and Harmon Contracting will show off new ideas in construction, decorating and building materials.
In keeping with River Island's nature theme, natural materials such as wood and fiber cement siding were allowed in construction, but vinyl siding was not.
The idea is to create the feel of old-time Augusta along the Savannah River.
"These house are all furnished, so they can see how we can fit their needs, they can get ideas from decorating," he said.
After the success of last year's showcase at Riverwood Plantation, Mr. Ivey said, the association is hoping to draw 7.000 visitors to this year's event.
Many visitors like to check out the homes' interiors.
"We have a lot of people who come just for decorating ideas, and we like that; they can bring a camera," Mr. Ivey said.
"I've seen people come back three or four times."
