Art exhibition

The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art will exhibit mixed media works by 40 artists in its main gallery at 506 Telfair St., through Friday, Oct. 21. The exhibit, A Sense of Place 2005, is the institute's 25th annual juried fine arts presentation. The exhibit is free. For more information, call 722-5495.

Mystery Gala

The Lynwood Holmes Mystery Gala, a fundraiser for the Augusta Mini Theatre, will be held Friday. A chartered bus will depart downtown Augusta at 5:30 p.m. to a mystery location for dining, entertainment with jazz vocalist Bess Daniels, and more. Support group

Augusta Area Survivors of Suicide, a support group for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one to suicide, will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday at Advent Lutheran Church, 3232 Washington Road. The meeting is free. For more information, call 863-6785.

Chorale auditions

The Augusta Chorale will hold auditions for its 2005-06 season at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Paine College Chapel on Druid Park Avenue. Participants are asked to bring a prepared piece. For more information, call 738-0746.

Opera at Maxwell

The Augusta Opera will present the Tales of Hoffman at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Grover C. Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre at Augusta State University, 2500 Walton Way. Tickets range in price from $25 to $115. For more information, call 826-4710.

Dinner theater

The Sunshine Boys will be staged at the Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre at 8 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday. Dinner will begin at 7 p.m., with the show following. Tickets are $34 for civilians, $32 for seniors, retirees, government civilian employees, active-duty E7 and above, $25 for active-duty E6 and below and $20 for the show only. Group to meet
