Lawyers for hospitals object to depositions

A Richmond County Superior Court judge is considering what to do about his order preventing South Carolina civil defense attorneys from deposing employees at two Augusta hospitals.

Attorneys for Doctors and University hospitals argued Wednesday in Richmond County Superior Court that they have no role to play in a Charleston, S.C., civil lawsuit between the family of a burn victim who died and the two businesses the family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against.

The Charleston attorneys representing a contractor and heating and air business countered that they have an expert who believes the half-million dollars in medical bills for burn victim Ethel Golden is excessive. A Doctors Hospital employee told Ms. Golden's son the night she entered the hospital that the medical bills would be substantial and the family needed an attorney, said Stephen Brown, a Charleston attorney.
