One candidate filed for the Super District 9 seat of the Richmond County school board on the first day of qualifying.
A.K. Hasan, a licensed Realtor with experience on the board, said it's not time for "on-the-job training," considering the short unexpired term of the seat.
The seat on the board was vacated when Dr. Johnny Hatney filed to run for the Super District 9 seat on the Augusta Commission.
Mr. Hasan, 50, served on the school board from 1982 to 1986, including a stint as president, and later was elected to the old Augusta City Council.
He outlined a five-point plan to be implemented should he be elected to the board.
The plan calls for actively involving the community in pursuit of quality education, building a home and school partnership based on faith and trust rather than threats of parental imprisonment, improving school security, working with the city and chamber of commerce in attracting businesses to the area and involving children in educational choices.
Qualifying will continue today from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. to noon Friday at the Board of Elections Office. The qualifying fee is $100, and qualifiers must have lived in the district at least one year and in the county at least two years.
Super District 9 comprises districts 1, 2, 4 and 5.
The election for the seat will be Nov. 8. If necessary, a runoff will be held Dec. 6.
