College Golf

Pacers too much for Division I field

In Florence, S.C., USC Aiken shot a collective 18-under par over 36 holes to jump to an 11-shot lead over a Division I field at the 21st Raines Development Group Intercollegiate.

Scott Brown carded 70-67-137 for the individual lead at 7 under.

The Pacers' Dane Burkhart is tied for second at 5 under, and freshman Matt Giftos is 4-under and tied for fourth.

South Carolina's "B" team is in third place at the event. Former South Aiken standout and current Gamecock, Patrick Cunning is 1 under (tied for 16th) at the Country Club of South Carolina.

- In Tuscaloosa, Ala., Garrett Phillips fired a career-best 4-under-par 68 on Monday to lead the Augusta State women to a 12-shot lead after the second round of the Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate.

Augusta State shot 5-over 293 as a team and leads homestanding Alabama by a dozen and Birmingham Southern by 14.

Phillips' score gave her a five-shot lead in the individual competition. She was backed by Patti Hogeboom's 72, Lauren Smith's 76 and Amanda Smith's 77 for Augusta State.

Pacers' Williams Player of the Week

USC Aiken's Laura Williams was selected as the Peach Belt Conference's Player of the Week.

Williams, from Six Mile, S.C., averaged 3.12 kills and 1.12 blocks in leading the Lady Pacers in four games this past week. This is the 5-foot-11 junior's first career selection, and the program's 24th.

Lynx add Lundberg, Bennett to roster

The Augusta Lynx added two more names to their training camp roster today, announcing they have agreed to terms with forward Ryan Bennett and defenseman Eric Lundberg for the 2005-06 season.

Bennett, 24, comes off a successful rookie campaign with the United Hockey League's Adirondack Frostbite. The 6-3, 200-pound Lundberg scored twice and added 10 assists with the Friars.

Kahne, Gordon to pay up for wrecks

Kasey Kahne and Robby Gordon avoided suspensions when NASCAR instead fined both drivers for road-rage incidents at New Hampshire on Sunday.

Gordon was fined a total of $35,000 and docked 50 points in the driver standings. His penalties were for intentionally trying to hit Michael Waltrip's car during they Sylvania 300, throwing his helmet at Waltrip's car, and cursing during a television interview.

Kahne was fined $25,000 and docked 25 points in the driver standings for intentionally hitting Kyle Busch's car as retaliation for an earlier accident.

- In Darlington, S.C., for the first time in almost a quarter-century, Darlington Raceway opened its track to the public on Saturday, raising more than $14,000 for the Red Cross and Hurricane Katrina victims.

Anyone who donated money to the Red Cross got to drive their vehicle or motorcycle for five paced laps at the historic track as part of a "Laps for Relief" fundraising event.

Williams, Sharapova play in exhibition

In Seoul, South Korea, Venus Williams made the most of her serve to defeat top-ranked Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-4 in an exhibition leading to the China Open.

- In Beijing, Lindsay Davenport, coming off a title in Bali, pulled out of the China Open because of a strained lower back.

Boxing

Slow sales push back St. Louis card

In St. Louis, Don King Productions and the Savvis Center said they postponed the Sept. 30 event that would have featured three championship bouts.

Promoters cited lackluster ticket sales stemming from competition from the playoff-bound Cardinals and the NFL's Rams.
