Outdoors calendar



Note: All the listed events are open to the public, although membership in some organizations may be required.

TODAY: Outdoor Destinations with Craig Johnson, airs at 1:30 p.m. on UPN. Another local outdoor program, Fishing with Ralph Barbee airs at 2, also on UPN.

MONDAY: A three-day Fly Tying class will begin at 7 p.m. at Rivers & Glen Trading Co., at Surrey Center, Augusta. Cost is $75. Call 738-4536 for details.

TUESDAY: The Sierra Club will meet at 6:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Walton Way Extension. Following an ice cream social, Dr. Ed Cashin will present a program, "What Bartram didn't write in his Journal," a commentary on William Bartram's travels and the upcoming Bartram Trail Conference annual meeting in Augusta, October 21-23. The public is invited.

FRIDAY-SATURDAY: An archery-only hunt will be held at Bussey Point Wildlife Area at Thurmond Lake. Bag limit is two deer per hunter, one doe and one quality buck (four or more points on one side). Call 1-800-533-3478 for more details.

SATURDAY: The Sierra Club will sponsor a trip to Heggie's Rock at 1:30 pm. Botanist Judy Gordon will lead a two-mile hike to a famous granite outcrop owned by The Nature Conservancy. Space is limited. Call 650-8314 to reserve a spot.

SATURDAY: Augusta-Aiken Audubon Society will hold a birding trip to Mistletoe State Park. Meet at the office area just inside the gate at 9 a.m. Call (706) 793-2788 for more details.

SEPT. 25: The 35th Military Police Detachment will sponsor a bass tournament at Butler Reservoir beginning at 7 a.m. Fort Gordon fishing permit requirements are waived for the tournament only. Entry fee is $20. Call 791-5033 for details.

- The Fort Gordon Sportsman's Club meets the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. More information, call Fred Perry at 791-5078.
