College Football

Schools agree to renew rivalry game

South Carolina and Clemson have agreed to a four-year deal to renew their annual rivalry on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

The first game of the new deal will be played at Clemson's Memorial Stadium on Nov. 25, 2006. The Tigers will also play host to the Nov. 29, 2008 game.

The Gamecocks will play host to games at Williams-Brice Stadium Nov. 24, 2007 and Nov. 28, 2009.

Hockey

Defenseman Cole returns to Augusta

The Augusta Lynx have agreed to terms with defenseman Phil Cole, who played in 42 games for the Lynx this past season. Cole, 23, began the season with the AHL's Albany River Rats before being assigned to the Lynx. While in Augusta, Cole scored a goal, had five points and 80 penalty minutes.

Cole is the 12th player to agree to terms with the Lynx.

- The ECHL announced that the Mississippi Sea Wolves have requested a voluntary suspension for the 2005-06 season. The team is located in Biloxi, which suffered a direct hit from Hurricane Katrina, and its home arena suffered extensive flood damage.

The ECHL will hear the request at a preseason board of governors meeting Sept. 22, after which the league will make an announcement regarding the upcoming season schedule.

The Sea Wolves plan to play in 2006-07.

Coble knocked out at Mid-Amateur

In Richmond, Texas, medalist Kerry Postillion defeated Virginia Derby Grimes 2 and 1 to advance to the final of the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur against Mary Ann Lapointe, of Canada.

Lapointe, the first foreign player to reach the final, beat Robin Burke, of Houston, 1-up at Shadow Hawk Golf Club. Grimes beat Augusta's Laura Coble 1 up in the quarterfinals.

- In Chattanooga, Tenn., Carlton Forrester won the last two holes and beat Michael McCoy 1-up to advance to the U.S. Mid-Amateur final against Kevin Marsh.

Marsh, from Las Vegas, defeated Steven Liebler, of Irmo, S.C., 2 and 1 in the other semifinal match at The Honors Course in the U.S. Golf Association event for amateurs 25 and over. Forrester, a former standout at Georgia Tech, rallied from a hole down with pars at Nos. 17 and 18 to beat McCoy, from West Des Moines, Iowa.

Nets move closer to a Brooklyn address

In New York, the New Jersey Nets moved closer to making a new home in Brooklyn when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority voted to sell an 8.3-acre railyard to team owner and real-estate developer Bruce Ratner.

Volleyball

USC Aiken evens its record in comeback

USC Aiken rallied for a 3-2 win against the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras at The Courthouse by the scores: 30-22, 20-30, 25-30, 30-26, 15-13.

Mandy Gerolstein led the Lady Pacers (5-5) with 18 kills and five blocks, while Laura Williams added 15 kills and five blocks.

In an earlier match, Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras swept Augusta State 30-27, 30-28, 30-24. Carly Ley and Rachael Marcy led the Lady Jaguars with nine kills apiece.

Tennis

Davenport reaches quarterfinal round

In Bali, Indonesia, top-seeded Lindsay Davenport began her bid for a fourth title this season by beating Rika Fujiwara, of Japan, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals of the Wismilak International.

- In Beijing, top-seeded Rafael Nadal finally played at the China Open, beating Taiwan's Wang Yeu-tzuoo 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the second round.

Nadal's first match since his third-round defeat at the U.S. Open was delayed two days while Wang completed business in Turkey.
