PHILADELPHIA - Chipper Jones sat out Tuesday with the strained left quadriceps he suffered during Monday's game.
He hurt it charging a bunt by the Phillies' Kenny Lofton and aggravated it attempting to beat out a double play.
"It's sore. But it's the ordinary day-after soreness," said Jones, who's hitting .306 despite now missing 53 games because of various injuries. "There's no sense in pushing it right this second. Hopefully it'll feel better tomorrow."
Also, Cox opted to hold out first baseman Adam LaRoche.
LaRoche took a sharp grounder off the side of his face Sunday; he was forced to leave the game as a result of disorientation and the large welt by his left ear.
Although he didn't have a concussion, a headache persisted into Monday.
"Head injuries bother me," Cox said, "trying to get them back out there too quick. We'll just wait another day and see."
RED SOX: An MRI of Boston outfielder Johnny Damon's left shoulder showed no structural damage.
Damon didn't play in Boston's 6-5 win in 11 innings over Toronto on Monday night. He has been playing with discomfort since injuring the shoulder on a slide against Baltimore on Sept. 4.
Boston manager Terry Fran-cona said Damon will remain in Boston for treatment while the Red Sox finish their road trip.
RHODES LEAVES INDIANS: Reliever Arthur Rhodes has left the club because of a family illness and will miss the rest of Cleveland's season.
"He's had to deal with a great deal this year," Indians manager Eric Wedge said before Tuesday's game. "It's best for him and his family that he is with them."
MARTE COULD GO ON DL: White Sox reliever Damaso Marte was in Chicago to have his sore neck examined, and manager Ozzie Guillen said the left-hander probably will go on the disabled list.
Marte is 3-3 with four saves and a 3.43 ERA in 60 relief appearances.
GOMEZ SIGNS EXTENSION: Infielder Chris Gomez and the Baltimore Orioles agreed to a $850,000, one-year contract extension through 2006.
Gomez entered play Tuesday with a .283 average, one homer and 17 RBI.
CUBS RECALL GRIEVE: Chicago recalled outfielder Ben Grieve from Triple-A Iowa.
Grieve hit .266 with 14 homers and 51 RBI in 86 games for Iowa.
SOSA SETTLES LAWSUIT: Sammy Sosa settled a lawsuit that alleged the Baltimore Orioles slugger owed more than $22,000 for a law firm's work in resolving tax disputes with the Internal Revenue Service, a lawyer said.
"The matter has been satisfactorily resolved and the parties remain on good terms," said Richard Josepher, a partner in the law firm.
