Robber takes money, escapes

Richmond County sheriff's investigators are looking into a Saturday afternoon armed robbery at a south Richmond County insurance office.

Investigator Thomas Johnson said the robbery happened after 2 p.m., when a man entered the Affordable Insurance office in the 2600 block of Tobacco Road, pretending to be a customer.

He said the clerk asked the man whether he needed help, to which he demanded to know where the money was and put a gun to her side.

Investigator Johnson said the clerk directed him to the cash box, and he took an undisclosed amount of money before trapping her in a bathroom by putting a sign against the door.

The suspect is described as a black man; 6 feet tall; weighing 170 pounds; between age 35 and his early 40s; wearing a white ball cap, dark blue button-up shirt and dark blue pants; and with a salt-and-pepper goatee.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the Richmond County Sheriff's Office at 821-1080.

Construction of weigh station will close lane

The right lane on Interstate 20 westbound from mile markers 187 to 189 will be closed Monday through Sept. 23 as construction continues on a new weigh station, a Department of Transportation news release said. However, the lane will be open from 1 p.m. Fridays until 8 a.m. Mondays to relieve congestion.

Miss Aiken County, teen winner crowned

Lyvia Hughes was crowned Miss Aiken County on Saturday night at the Miss Aiken County Scholarship pageant.

The event was held at the University of South Carolina Aiken's Etherredge Center.

Ms. Hughes, 20, also won the swimsuit competition. She will represent the county in the Miss South Carolina Pageant next year.

Adrianne Kemp, 21, won the talent competition, and Mamie Foreman, 18, was chosen Miss Congeniality, said David Towles, a member of the Miss Aiken County Scholarship Committee.

Hannah Cromer, 13, was crowned Miss Aiken County Teen. The Leavelle McCampbell Middle School pupil also won the talent and physical fitness contests and was selected Miss Congeniality. She, too, will represent the county in next year's state competition.

Deputies charge man in robbery, car theft

Richmond County sheriff's deputies arrested a North Augusta man Saturday and charged him in connection with a robbery and a car theft.

Authorities charged Johnathan Lamar Hillary, 18, of the 100 block of Ridgeland Drive, with armed robbery, theft by taking motor vehicle and use of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to a sheriff's office incident report.

Police said Mr. Hillary and another man robbed two men, ages 37 and 33, at gunpoint at an apartment in the 200 block of Crawford Avenue at about 5:10 a.m., according to the report.

Mr. Hillary and the second man fled the scene with $80, two cell phones, a DVD player, a bottle of brandy and a 2001 Jeep Cherokee, the report said.

Police arrested Mr. Hillary in the 1200 block of Murphy Street.

Teenager is shot in groin during drive-by

Richmond County sheriff's deputies are investigating the shooting of a teenage boy Friday night, a police report states.

At 11:56 p.m., the 15-year-old boy was standing on the sidewalk in the 1900 block of Cooney Circle when several men in a vehicle, which was not described in the report, fired shots.

One shot struck the teenager in the groin.

Choir to celebrate director's anniversary

A concert and worship service celebrating Jamie Council Garvey's 25th anniversary as organist and director of music at St. John United Methodist Church will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at the church, 736 Greene St.

An anthem with music by composer Dr. Carlton R. Young, editor of The United Methodist Hymnal, and text by Dr. Don Saliers, a professor at Emory University's Candler School of Theology, has been commissioned for the event.

A reception will follow in the church courtyard. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 724-9641.

Education Expo to be held at Fort Discovery

The National Science Center's Fort Discovery, 1 Seventh St., will hold its Education Expo for educators from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Educators will be able to visit booths from Fort Discovery and about 30 other organizations.
