Work for real progress in Augusta

Dr. John R. Maben's letter to the editor ("Uncle Toms impede genuine progress," Sept. 3), defining Uncle Toms for us, conveys the same distrust that occurred recently in New Orleans: "When water began rising in predominantly black neighborhoods, many jumped to the conclusion that the levee had been purposely breached to preserve the old city and hotels." ("Once-vibrant New orleans is inundated by chaos," Sept. 3 news story).

In reference to Dr. Maben's comments regarding the Augusta Commission: Instead of festering bitterness, distrust and animosity, whatever happened to fostering faith, peace and good will (mere words only reserved for the holiday season?) and working together in harmony for the good of Augusta?

Now, that would be genuine progress.
