Regarding Craig Spinks' Aug. 25 letter to the editor, "Superintendent made right move":
Richmond County School Superintendent Charles Larke's Academic Reform Plan did not derive from assistant superintendents Virginia Bradshaw and Patricia Burau, as the writer suggested. His plan to improve academic rigor and provide educational opportunities for all students was developed based on Dr. Larke's own research and experience as a former algebra and accounting teacher at Westside High School. He also served as coordinator for vocational special-needs students at Westside, and recognizes the benefits of all students following a dual academic track at the high-school level.
Dr. Larke's plan calls for all high school students to complete designated college prep courses and at least three units in technical career education. The superintendent gained the motivation to strive for implementation of his plan from a similar plan that the Los Angeles Board of Education approved in June.
