Mental health spirituality can mix

Here we go again - Tom Cruise of the Scientology cult confusing those who have mental health disorders ("Mental-health needs put believers in dilemma," July 30). The same Augusta Chronicle article quotes two California pastors who teach that "people are afflicted with proglems of the soul, not illnesses of the mind."

Modern medicine has shown us that these conditions, including depression, are chemical disorders of the brain. I am a Christian with bipolar depression who believes that God could rid me of this thorn if it was His will. I think He doesn't because He wants me to help those who suffer.

My church, First Baptist Church of Augusta, has a support ministry, the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, a chapter of DBSA International. We are open to anyone with these conditions, their families and others who have interest. I am blessed with a pharmacy background that helps me as the group leader. There are many other mental health support groups locally...

Scientologists also omit the great advances in the science of prescription medicines to treat these complex disorders, including using epilepsy medications for bipolar disorders.

The article in The Chronicle asked, "Are religious beliefs and mental health trestments so oppositional that people have to choose one over the other? Can people find a compromise?" Christian psychologists and psychiatrists tell us they are compatible. Don't suffer needlessly when so much great treatment is available. Seek the guidance of your religious leaders and your physicians.
