USC Aiken finishes among the top 10
In Spartanburg, S.C., USC Aiken's women's cross country team placed 10th out of 25 schools in the Eye Opener Invitational on Saturday.
Junior Marcie Milner led the Lady Pacers with a 16th-place finish with a time of 20 minutes, 29.86 seconds.
Wingate won the meet with all five runners placing in the top 21; Augusta State was 12th at 322.
Hilary White of Savannah College of Art and Design won the individual race with a time of 18:30.16, more than 30 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
- In Hickory, N.C., the USC Aiken volleyball team split its final two matches of the Lenoir-Rhyne/Moretz Sports Invitational on Saturday.
Slippery Rock beat the Lady Pacers 30-28, 30-27, 27-30 and 30-27. USC Aiken (2-2) rebounded against Pfeiffer, winning 30-23, 30-23 and 30-24.
- In Jefferson City, Tenn., the Augusta State volleyball team lost its two opening-round games in the Carson-Newman Tournament on Friday.
Converse beat Augusta State 30-20, 27-30, 27-30, 30-24, 15-6 in the first game; Mars Hill followed with a 24-30, 28-30, 30-28, 30-28, 15-11 victory over the Lady Jaguars.
Golf
Driving contest won by North Carolinian
Jermy Chandler of Burnsville, N.C., won Saturday's Pinnacle Exceptional Driver Championship at Wedges & Woods driving range.
Chandler had 48 points on the 320-yard long, 40-yard wide grid that rewarded players for length and accuracy.
Sam Freedman of Columbia finished second with 38 points.
The 18 contestants hit five balls within a two-minute time limit. Both Chandler and Freedman placed four balls within the grid.
Chandler won a Cobra SZ driver and a spot in the finals Nov. 9-12 at Laughlin, Nev.
The national winner receives a Honda S2000 and $50,000.

U.S. skates into Four Nations' final
In Hameenlinna, Finland, Jenny Potter scored twice to lead the United States past Sweden, 2-0 on Saturday, sending the Americans to the final of the women's Four Nations Cup against Canada for the fourth consecutive year.
Canada beat host Finland, 6-1, earlier at Tampere in its final round-robin game. The gold-medal game is today.
Potter scored just more than 2 minutes in, and added a power-play goal at 18:20.
Canada is the defending champion after edging the U.S. 2-1 to win last year's tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y. The United States is the reigning world champion, having beaten Canada in a penalty shot shootout in April's title game in Sweden.

Ukraine earns spot in 2006 World Cup
Ukraine became the first European nation to qualify for next year's World Cup, and Israel, England Italy and the Netherlands took steps forward Saturday toward making next year's 32- nation field.
Romania upset the fourth-ranked Czech Republic to boost its chances, and South Africa was beaten at Burkina Faso and is in danger of missing soccer's showcase tournament.
Ukraine tied 1-1 at Georgia in a game FIFA ordered played in an empty stadium because of fan violence at Georgia's home games against Greece and Turkey. Ruslan Rotan put the visitors ahead in the 44rd minute, but Georgi Gakhokidze tied the score in the 89th.
The eight European group winners and top two second-place teams qualify, and the other six second-place teams go to playoffs for three more berths.
In the North and Central America region, Trinidad rallied on two late goals by Stern John to beat visiting Guatemala 3-2, leaving both teams at 2-4-1 with seven points. Costa Rica, also 2-4-1, was at Panama (0-4-2) Saturday night.
- In Santander, Spain, Raul Tamudo and Fernando Morientes scored as Spain beat Canada, 2-1 in an exhibition game Saturday.
