Team earns sectional spot

Petersburg Racquet Club's senior 6.0 mixed doubles team recently won the Georgia State Mixed Doubles championship in Rome, Ga., and will go on to the sectional tournament in October.

The team, which calls itself "Claws and Paws," is made up of Don Murphree, Larry Bailey, Yvonne Harrison, Gregg Jennings, Donnalene Pullen, Richard Pullen, Mary Jane Rekito, Jim Spangler and Joan Steinberg.

The local group was undefeated in the Rome event and posted a 9-3 record in individual matches.

In the championship match, Murphree and Harrison won 6-2, 6-1. Bailey and Donnalene Pullen retired because of heat exhaustion, which left the deciding match up to Rekito and Jennings. The local duo split the first two sets but won the tiebreaker 11-9.
