Greenbrier's J.J. Johnson entered his sixth professional baseball season in the Chicago Cubs' organization with 21 home runs. With the help of a monster game a week ago today, Johnson already has 10 this season.
Johnson broke out of a slump with three home runs to help his Daytona Cubs pound the St. Lucie Mets, 13-0, in the high-Class A Florida State League. Johnson went 4-for-5 with eight RBI.
"I can't explain it," Johnson told the Daytona Beach News-Journal. "I've never had a game like this. I've never had two home runs in a game before, let alone three. It was just a dream night."
Johnson belted a two-run homer in the second, an RBI double in the third, a two-run home run in the seventh and a three-run home run in the eighth.
"I was like 3-for-30 (going into the game)," Johnson told the newspaper. "I came into the game just wanting to make good contact and see the ball.
"Baseball is a really funny game. Every time you think you have this game figured out, the baseball gods bring you back to reality."
Johnson was a sixth-round pick by the Cubs in 2000.
- Screven County's Macay McBride got his second promotion of the season to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. The left-handed reliever had a 6.00 ERA in nine appearances with the Braves at the end of July and early August.
- Westside's Matt Childers earned his first save for the Richmond Braves a week ago with three scoreless innings and earned his second save Saturday with three more shutout innings. On Wednesday, older brother Jason Childers earned his first win for the Braves by not allowing a hit in 1Q innings of relief.
- Former Augusta State pitcher Augie Rodriguez earned his second win of the season Thursday in a seven-inning Frontier League game. Mid-Missouri's Rodriguez held River City to three hits and one unearned run.
ALUMNI ALERT: Right-handed reliever Kevin Ool, who spent part of last season with the Augusta GreenJackets, was named to the Midwest League's postseason all-star team. Ool went 9-2 with three saves and a 2.15 ERA with the Swing of the Quad Cities, the St. Louis Cardinals' low A affiliate. He made his Florida State League debut with the Palm Beach Cardinals on June 20 and went 1-0 with a 1.37 ERA in 12 appearances.
Ool hasn't had as much luck with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals since his debut July 25. In 11 appearances, Ool was 1-0 with a 5.52 ERA.
- Right-hander Brian Wilson began this season as the GreenJackets' closer. After compiling a 5-1 record, 13 saves and a 0.82 ERA, the San Francisco Giants promoted him to Double-A Norwich. Wilson was even better in Connecticut, with a 0.57 ERA and eight saves.
On Aug. 17, Wilson made his Triple-A debut with Fresno, where he has a 3.38 ERA in five games. On Thursday, rosters were announced for the Arizona Fall League, which Baseball America called "a stomping ground for budding prospects" on its Web site, and Wilson is listed as a pitcher for the Mesa Solar Sox.
Wilson is one of three former GreenJackets to earn a roster spot on one of the six teams. Brandon Moss, Augusta's all-star right fielder last year, and Jesus Delgado, a right-handed pitcher for last year's team, were named to the Peoria Saguaros.
