Coble qualifies for Women's Mid-Am

Augusta's Laura Coble carded 73 at The Landings Club in Savannah, Ga., for medalist honors, qualifying her for the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur.

The event will be held Sept. 10-15 at Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond, Texas.

College Basketball

USC Aiken adds two more players

The USC Aiken women's basketball team has added two recruits for the 2005-06 season.

Head coach Mike Brandt announced the addition of LaToshia Broadwater and Satu Leppanen.

Broadwater will be a junior and Leppanen a freshman for the Lady Pacers.

Broadwater, a 5-8 guard from Augusta, was an all-region player at Richmond Academy and played two seasons at Florida Community College.

Leppanen, a 6-0 forward from Espoo, Finland, participated in the Finnish National Team.

Tennis

Sharapova claims WTA No. 1 ranking

In St. Petersburg, Fla., Maria Sharapova took over the WTA Tour's No. 1 ranking from Lindsay Davenport, who held the top spot since October.

Sharapova advanced despite her withdrawal before the Rogers Cup in Toronto because of injury. She is the 15th player to be No. 1 - and first from Russia - since the tour began its computer rankings in 1975.

"I know there is a lot of responsibility that comes along with being No. 1," the 18-year-old Russian said. "And I want to represent women's tennis with the same class and style as the other great players, like Steffi Graf, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Monica Seles, Lindsay and the others."

Sharapova started the year at No. 4 has won six titles in the last 12 months in addition to her 2004 Wimbledon crown and season-ending title at the Tour Championships.

Running

59-year-old dies in Colo. marathon

In Colorado Springs, Colo., an experienced 59-year-old runner collapsed and died during the Pikes Peak Marathon despite attempts by competitors to save him a little more than two miles from the summit.

Gary Williams of Norman, Okla., died Sunday while making his way up the 14,115-foot mountain in what his son said was his father's 45th marathon.

A rescue helicopter arrived, but a paramedic declared him dead. Larry Lewis, search and rescue commander, said Williams most likely died of a heart attack. Williams was about four hours into the race when he collapsed. CPR efforts failed.

Steve Williams said his father had no heart problems, family history of heart trouble or hint of illness before the race.

Selanne signs for a year with Ducks

In Anaheim, Calif., Teemu Selanne, the second-leading scorer in Anaheim history, returned to the Mighty Ducks.

The 35-year-old free agent signed a one-year contract. Selanne, a nine-time All-Star, has averaged 37 goals year in 12 NHL seasons.

Selanne's 482 career points ranks second in franchise history behind Paul Kariya's 669. Since entering the league with Winnipeg in 1992, he has 452 goals. Only Jaromir Jagr (478) has scored more.
