RiverDogs bury Jackets in fifth

A night after providing the spark for Charleston's seven-run, seventh-inning rally, Mario Holmann stole the show again on Sunday night.

Holmann's go-ahead RBI single and steal of home turned the game for the RiverDogs, who utilized the strange fifth inning rally to defeat the GreenJackets, 5-2 at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

RiverDogs starting pitcher Brett Smith ran into some trouble in the first three innings, giving up two runs on four hits and providing the GreenJackets with some early momentum.

Charleston fought back in the second inning, scoring two runs on a single, double and a sacrifice fly.

After getting a quick out in the fifth, Augusta starter Caleb Salankey allowed a single, a walk, and Holmann's go-ahead RBI single. After another base hit, the RiverDogs got aggressive on the basepaths, putting together consecutive double steals and scoring two runs on Holmann's steal and a wild pitch.

"The pitch before I went home he was slow to the plate," Holmann said.

"He delivered the next pitch the same way, so I decided to try it."

Smith settled down after the early trouble, getting his seventh victory of the season. He allowed only two runs and five hits while striking out four in seven strong innings. He gave way to T.J. Beam, who shut down the GreenJackets in the final two innings to get his third save on the year.

Catcher Irwil Rojas paced the RiverDogs, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an early run.

Carlos Sosa provided an early spark for the GreenJackets, lacing an RBI single to give Augusta its first run of the contest.

Sosa finished the night 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. The Greenjackets (28-26) managed just six hits on the night.
