Here's a look at what's new in DVD and video releases this week and a calendar of what's coming:
MY LEFT FOOT, THE GLASS SHIELD (MIRAMAX, $19.99): Two dramas get DVD updates, led by a new release of 1989's My Left Foot, which earned a best-actor Academy Award for Daniel Day-Lewis as Irish writer and artist Christy Brown in his struggle with cerebral palsy, and a supporting-actress Oscar for Brenda Fricker as his mother. The DVD has a behind-the-scenes featurette and a segment on the real Mr. Brown. The 1995 police tale The Glass Shield features Ice Cube, Michael Boatman and Lori Petty in the story of two cops dealing with corruption in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The DVD has commentary and an interview with writer-director Charles Burnett.
ASTAIRE & ROGERS COLLECTION: VOLUME 1 (WARNER BROS., $19.97 EACH, $59.92 SET): A nice boxed set collects five of the 10 films that paired dancing fools Fred and Ginger hoofing their way through madcap romantic misadventures. Debuting on DVD are 1935's Top Hat, with Astaire and Rogers' sumptuous Cheek to Cheek dance number a highlight among the Irving Berlin tunes; two flicks from 1936, Swing Time, which introduced the Oscar-winning song The Way You Look Tonight, and the Navy romp Follow the Fleet, also featuring Berlin songs; 1937's Shall We Dance, with music by George and Ira Gershwin; and 1949's The Barkleys of Broadway, the pair's last film together. DVD extras include background featurettes, vintage cartoons and short films, and commentary on some films. Astaire's daughter, Ava, provides commentary on Top Hat.
THE OFFICE: SEASON ONE (UNIVERSAL, $29.98): As Steve Carell makes his big-screen, leading-man debut in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, the first six episodes of his sitcom hit DVD. Mr. Carell stars as a hapless boss in this satiric look at workplace culture that was adapted from the hit British show. The DVD has deleted scenes and commentary with Mr. Carell and collaborators.
THE SIMPSONS: THE COMPLETE SIXTH SEASON (20TH CENTURY FOX, $49.99): Year six highlights include the animated dysfunctional family's visit to Itchy & Scratchy Land, the return of Sideshow Bob (voiced by Kelsey Grammer) and the season-ending Who Shot Mr. Burns? cliffhanger. The four-disc set has 25 episodes, with commentary on each from cast and crew.
THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON (PARAMOUNT, $39.99): Sheriff Andy Taylor (Griffith), deputy Barney (Don Knotts), adorable kid Opie (Ron Howard) and feisty Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier) are joined by Jim Nabors in his debut as Gomer Pyle. Year three's 32 episodes are on five discs.
THE DICK CAVETT SHOW: ROCK ICONS (SHOUT, $39.98): Mr. Cavett's late-night talk show that aired from 1969 to '75 featured candid appearances with many top rockers. Among those featured in this three-disc set: The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, George Harrison, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon. Mr. Cavett provides a new interview and episode introductions.
