In Greenville, S.C., right fielder Brian Horwitz extended his hitting streak to 24 games in a three-run first inning, and the Augusta GreenJackets went on to beat the Greenville Bombers 8-4 on Tuesday.

It was the seventh win in a row for the GreenJackets (28-21), who are 11-3 in August and a half-game behind first-place Kannapolis in the South Atlantic League Southern Division.

Boxing

Holyfield banned from New York

Evander Holyfield was banned from fighting in New York by the state's athletic commission, the Daily News reported Tuesday.

The New York State Athletic Commission suspended the 42-year-old Holyfield's boxing license because of his "diminished skills and poor performance," the newspaper reported. The commission also lifted a medical suspension that had blocked him from fighting in other states.

State Athletic Commissioner Ron Stevens told the newspaper Holyfield underwent a battery of nine tests, including a few designed to detect brain trauma. According to the tests' findings, Holyfield has no significant health problems. And the commission wants to make sure that continues to be the case.

Holyfield, of Fairburn, Ga., lost to Larry Donald on Nov. 13, and is 2-5-2 since 1999.

Hewitt, Safin post wins in comebacks

In Mason, Ohio, Lleyton Hewitt shook off the lasting effects of a severe stomach virus, gradually regaining his touch Tuesday as he won a first-round match in the $2.45 million Cincinnati Masters.

The third-seeded Hewitt beat Igor Andreev 6-3, 6-4 on a muggy afternoon that tested his stamina. A week earlier, the Australian had to quit a first-round match in Montreal because of the stomach ailment - the first time he's ever given up.

Russia's Marat Safin also got back onto the court after a much longer absence Tuesday. The fourth-seeded Safin hadn't played since Wimbledon because of an injured ligament in his left knee.

He opened his match against Jan Hernych with a double fault, and doubled faulted twice while losing the opening game. He eventually got rolling and pulled out a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win.

Also, Tony Stewart was placed on probation for the rest of the year and fined $5,000 Tuesday for intentionally running into another car after the Busch series race Saturday at Watkins Glen International.
