USC Aiken adds two freshmen to lineup

USC Aiken has added two freshmen to its already talented lineup.

Matt Giftos and Cory Sommer signed national letters of intent to play for the defending national champion Pacers.

Giftos is the back-to-back New Hampshire State Junior champion and has also won four International Junior Golf Association events. He is the 18th in Golfweek's junior rankings.

Sommer earned All-State honors while compiling a 72.1 stroke average at Parrott Academy in North Carolina.

- In Atlanta, Augusta's Les Perry carded 71 at United States Mid-Amateur Qualifying held at Druid Hills Golf Club.

His score was good enough to make him an alternate for the event, which will be held at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn., Sept. 10-15th.

Three golfers had 68 to tie for medalist honors, and the top eight advanced.

Tennis

Federer's streak seventh all-time

In Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Roger Federer extended his time as the top-ranked tennis player to 81 weeks Monday, lifting him to seventh on the men's career list.

Federer became No. 1 on Feb. 2, 2004, after winning the Australian Open.

He's surpassed the 80 weeks that Australia's Lleyton Hewitt spent in the top spot for all but two weeks between November 2001 and June 2003.

Ahead of Federer on the list for the longest time spent at No. 1 is Andre Agassi (101 weeks), Bjorn Borg (109 weeks), John McEnroe (170 weeks), Jimmy Connors (268 weeks) and Ivan Lendl (270 weeks). Pete Sampras holds the record for the longest time at No. 1 with 286 weeks.

Federer's lead in the rankings has been cut to 73 points after French Open champion Rafael Nadal won a Masters Series event in Montreal on Sunday.

- In Mason, Ohio, Andre Agassi's sore back is bothering him again, forcing him to take a couple of weeks off so he can play in the U.S. Open.

The 35-year-old Agassi felt soreness after a three-set loss to Nadal in Montreal on Sunday. He decided to pull out of the Cincinnati Masters, which he won last year, rather than aggravate the problem.

"The alternative is me not being at my best, me being out there in the situation where I can do more damage to myself and not be part of more tournaments," Agassi said.

Agassi, currently ranked No. 9 in the world, is 32-10 this season.

Agassi has won 60 tournaments, including eight grand slams, in his 19-year career.

College Basketball

Forward Moore will leave Tigers' team

In Clemson, S.C., Cheyenne Moore, a freshman who hit the game-winning 3-pointer against South Carolina last December, has decided to leave the Tigers for another Division I school.

Moore, a 6-foot-5 forward from Baltimore, played all 32 games for Clemson last season, starting 17. He averaged 6.6 points and 2.5 rebounds a game.

Moore had not yet decided where to play, the school said.

"I believe that my best opportunity to reach my goals on and off the court is to transfer to another school at this time. It's that simple," Moore said.
