Quarterbacks shine in Clemson scrimmage

CLEMSON, S.C. - Clemson's quarterbacks threw for four touchdowns and no interceptions as the Tigers held their first scrimmage of fall practice Saturday.

Starter Charlie Whitehurst, who threw 17 interceptions in a disappointing 2004 season, went 14-of-21 for 140 yards and two touchdowns.

Backup Will Proctor was 7-for-13 for 156 yards and two touchdowns, including a 59-yard scoring pass to freshman Tyler Grisham.

Coach Tommy Bowden had the first-team offense go against the first-string defense for the entire 72-play scrimmage. He was impressed with his offense, but said he still has questions about the defense.

"I didn't think we tackled very well," Bowden said.

Kelvin Grant led all receivers with 78 yards on four catches, including a 43-yard catch from Proctor early in the scrimmage. But Grant had to leave practice early after injuring his shoulder diving for a 14-yard scoring pass. The extent of his injury won't be known until Sunday at the earliest.

Nick Watkins led the defense with seven tackles, including two for loss and Anthony Waters also had seven tackles.

Jan Dean made a 52-yard field goal that hit the crossbar and bounced over as well as a 45-yarder. His 57-yard attempt had the distance, but was wide left.

The Tigers will hold fan appreciation day Sunday at 3 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
