Back in time
Today in regional history:
AUG. 4, 1962
A safety hat and a pile of soft earth enabled a construction worker to escape practically unhurt after a three-story fall Friday. David E. Waters, 21, of Beech Island, was working on Augusta's new Procter & Gamble plant when he took the 30-foot fall.
Mr. Waters was nailing forms on the third floor of the processing building when he fell. He dropped about 10 feet and struck his head on a steel beam, but was saved from injury by his hard hat. Mr. Waters then landed in a pile of soft earth. He was taken to University Hospital and released in good condition after an hour observation. He suffered only minor injuries to his knees and face.
Packing Lunches
You want to pack a lunch you know your child will eat, and you want it to be healthy.
Here's a few tips to satisfy the pickiest.
- Emphasize cut fruit and vegetables; lean meat or peanut butter sandwiches; whole-grain bread; and low or nonfat dairy products.
- Aim for variety, offering children a choice among many healthy foods.
- Respect each childs tastes; what works for one might not work for another.
- Dont be too strict: Some treats are fine if children are otherwise eating well.
- Avoid soda and other sweetened drinks.
- Make food user-friendly: Peel and chop in advance.
- Pack only foods that your children have already tried at home.
- If your children buy a school lunch, supplement it with fruit or vegetables from home.
