Go ahead, make our day

So the United Nations is mired in an oil-for-food scandal, hasn't the spine to even enforce its own resolutions, is chronically anti-American and has only become hopelessly bloated, with precious little reforms, in more than half a century.

And Democrats are worried about hurting its feelings?

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the president's recess appointment of that monster John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations will be the diplomatic faux pas of the century! Imagine how Bolton's infamous blunt talk will bruise the tender sensibilities at the United Nations and cripple its legendary effectiveness.

Oh, please.

The truth is, Democrats are grasping at straws to find an issue, any issue, where they can score against President George W. Bush. They tried with his judicial appointments. They're trying with his Supreme Court nominee.

The only real success they've had is in delaying Bolton's confirmation. It's perfectly understandable why the president would step in and appoint Bolton in the absence of an up-or-down vote by the Senate.

Congressional Democrats aren't worried about America's effectiveness at the United Nations; otherwise they'd help the president fill the vacant ambassador's seat. They simply want to block a nominee, any nominee, so they can claim relevance. And they smell blood in the water because Bolton is mean or loud or abusive or some such nonsense.

If Bolton is more assertive than your average diplomat, all the better. The United Nations is a cesspool of inefficiency and shady dealings. Shake it up. Go ahead. Make our day.

Democrats are crying crocodile tears if they really expect us to believe the Bolton appointment has undermined U.S. credibility as they claim. In reality, Democratic sniping has undermined national unity and the president's ability to put forth a single diplomatic face.

John Bolton now represents America.

Whom do congressional Demo-crats represent?
