WHAT'S NEW

- The new River Ridge Elementary School opens Wednesday. The school at 4109 Mullikin Road will serve about 500 pupils. Many of them were rezoned into the school district from Riverside, Greenbrier and Stevens Creek elementary schools.

- The iParent program will expand to include all of Columbia County's middle and high schools. The computer program allows parents to view their children's grades, attendance records and school assignments over the Internet. Technology specialists will be on hand at open houses to sign up parents for the program. Parents can also get a password by contacting their child's school counselor.

- Work is continuing on a new Evans Middle School campus and new school system administration building on Hereford Farm Road. The work won't be completed until summer 2006. The current Evans Middle, on the corner of Washington and Belair roads, will be torn down and turned into a retail shopping center.

- Three new public safety officers will patrol Columbia County's public school. The three new hires brings the total of school safety officers in the county to eight.

- Several repair projects took place at schools during the summer. Gymnasium floors were replaced at Lakeside and Riverside middle schools. Bleachers were or are being replaced at Lakeside, Riverside, Columbia and Harlem middle schools. Auditorium floors were replaced at all of the county's public high schools. New tile and carpet was installed in areas of Evans High School.
