Song wins band trip to gospel music seminar

Christian rock band Sojourner's Take Me Away will do just that for the Aiken County artists.

The song by band member Brent Douglas won the radio station WAFJ-FM talent search contest in June and a trip for the band to Estes Park, Colo., to attend the Gospel Music Association's Music in the Rockies event next week.

After learning the ins and outs of the music industry by day and attending Christian concerts by night, Sojourner will compete for the grand prize - the right to share the stage with major Christian artists at the Disney World Night of Joy in September.

The competition has launched Michael W. Smith, Point of Grace and Jars of Clay, said Mr. Douglas, Sojourner's bass player. He does the vocals with lead guitarist Matt Smith and rhythm guitarist Joel Leopard. Bruce Chapman plays drums.

First place in the WAFJ contest also meant 100 plays on the Christian station.

"We entered the contest to get our music and name out in the public," Mr. Douglas said.

The band learned about the station's contest last fall and entered a recording of Take Me Away, Mr. Douglas' musing about his high school years.

Sojourner fans keep asking the band members whether the song will continue to air, but stations typically play only music registered with ASCAP or BMI, said Mr. Douglas, who wants to learn more of the business and the legal angles for a rock band at the music seminar.

When the band gets back, its first CD, Supernova EP, will be released. The album includes Take Me Away.

Mr. Douglas sees Sojourner's career starting to unfold with the making of Supernova.

"Other venues wouldn't listen to us until we had a CD," he said.
