Outdoors calendar

NOTE: All the listed events are open to the public, although membership in some organizations may be required.

Today: Outdoor Destinations with Craig Johnson, a local outdoor program, airs at 1:30 p.m. on UPN channels. Another local outdoor show, Fishing with Ralph Barbee, airs at 2 p.m., also on UPN.

JULY 15-17: The Augusta Southern Nationals dragboat races will be held at the riverfront from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day with concessions, entertainment and racing. Go to www.augustasouthernnationals.org for ticket info and details.

JULY 14: The Augusta Aiken Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m. at North Augusta Community Center, on Brookside Avenue. Jim Wilson will discuss efforts in Georgia to protect sites designated as important nesting and roost sites. The public is welcome.

JULY 16: A half-day flyfishing clinic will be held at Rivers & Glen outfitters at Surrey Center, Augusta. Hours are 9 a.m. to noon and cost is $55. Call (706) 738-4536 for details.

JULY 16: Aiken Augusta Audubon Society will participate in the North American Butterfly Count at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park or the Silver Bluff Preserve. Call (803) 471-0291 for details.

JULY 21: Learn about the Carolina Dog, the most primitive dog of the Southeast, from Savannah River Ecology Lab's Dr. Lehr Brisbin. The 7 p.m. lecture will be at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. Cost is $3 for member family and $5 for non-member family. If you want to bring a picnic dinner, arrive at 6 p.m. Call 828-2109 for more details.

JULY 23: A day-long flyfishing outing will be held on the Saluda River near Columbia. The event is sponsored by Rivers & Glen outfitters in Augusta. Cost is $125. Call 738-4536 for details.

JULY 28-30: Quail Unlimited will hold its National Convention & Wildlife Expo at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel with daily exhibits, seminars and demonstrations. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. go to www.qu.org or call (803) 637-5731 for more information.

JULY 30: A workshop on nature photography conducted by Ed Belinski will begin at 9 a.m. at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. Bring tripod and equipment. Cost is $3 for members and $5 for non-members. Call 828-2109 for more details.

AUG. 5: A saltwater flyfishing class will be held at Rivers & Glen outfitters in Augusta from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Session II will be held Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon. Cost is $50 for both sessions. Call 738-4536 for more details.
