Council seeks to bring sports events to North Augusta

A newly formed council will work to attract more sporting events to North Augusta.

"The North Augusta Sports Commission is one of the most exciting initiatives," said Briton Williams, who serves on the North Augusta 2000 board of directors. "It will be a huge asset to this community."

North Augusta 2000 approved the commission's formation on June 23.

"We have been discussing this for a while," said John Felak, who is on the five-member commission. "Our effort is to promote the city of North Augusta and the surrounding communities to attract sporting events not currently in the area."

Those events include regional and national skateboarding, fishing, running, cycling and youth golf competitions, he said.

While there is a sports council in Augusta, Mr. Felak said he doesn't think his group will be in competition.

"I think we are more of a separate group," he said. "We will be working on our own events."

A priority for the commission is creating a North Augusta Sports Hall of Fame and inducting the first members in October.

The committee hasn't held its first meeting yet, but members have been having informal talks on different events, he said.

Mr. Felak said the community is welcome to nominate athletes, coaches, volunteers and supporters of sports in North Augusta for the hall of fame. A description of how the individual has impacted sports in the community should be submitted with the nomination.

Mr. Felak said the list of inaugural inductees should be decided by mid-September.

"It's real exciting to be involved in this," he said, adding that the timing of the hall of fame is significant because North Augusta will be celebrating its centennial next year.

A site has for the hall of fame has not been determined, but Riverview Park Activities Center, the North Augusta Community Center and North Augusta High School have been suggested as possible venues. Other members of the North Augusta Sports Commission include Richard Fletcher, Mike Flippo, Ken Franklin and Rick Thomas.

Nominations for the hall of fame should be sent to North Augusta 2000, P.O. Box 6067, North Augusta, SC 29681.
