St. Joseph Hospital may be closed, sold or downsized, according to Ascension Health, the non-profit health system that operates the hospital.
Ascension officials have yet to decide on the fate of the hospital, but hope to make a decision within the next 60 to 75 days, according to a media release from the St. Louis-based Ascension.
We recognize that this news will have a significant impact on our associates and the community, stated Laura Kaiser, an Ascension vice president for Health Ministry Positioning and Operations.
While no final decisions have been made, we are committed to keeping everyone well informed, she stated in the release.
The announcement came following an extensive evaluation by Ascension Health and leadership at St. Joseph, the release stated.
On May 2 the hospital cut 100 jobs after severing ties with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia Inc., its largest managed care contractor.
The hospital employs approximately 1,000 full and part-time employees.
