Work needed on Ga. 56

Recent articles have highlighted the dangers associated with travel on Ga. Highway 56.

This highway has not kept pace with the continuing growth in this portion of Richmond County. I have discussed my concerns with Augusta District 8 Commissioner Jimmy Smith, who - with state Department of Transportation officials - is pursuing improvements to this outdated highway.

To the thousands who travel this road daily, I encourage you to support your public officials as they move to update the transportation infrastructure in this area. Immediate attention should be addressed to the explosive growth surrounding the Highway 56-Old Waynesboro Road intersection. Recent retail and residential growth there will make the intersection increasingly difficult to move through safely.
