Mr. Robert Paul Stuntz (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga. - On Tuesday, May 24, 2005, Robert Paul Stuntz, of Augusta, passed away following a brief illness. He was born in El Dorado, Kan., on September 13, 1918, the son of the late Anna Laura Lotz and Ross Maxwell Stuntz. Mr. Stuntz graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1938 with a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering. He served in World War II as a line officer in the U.S. Navy. Following graduation from Georgia Tech, Mr. Stuntz moved to Augusta and married the late Elizabeth Schley Stuntz of Augusta. Mr. Stuntz worked for over 40 years with Babcock and Wilcox, retiring as Vice President and General Manager in 1982. Mr. Stuntz served many civic organizations. He was a past president of the Augusta Chamber of Commerce, the Augusta Red Cross, the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation, and Junior Achievement. He also served as a member of the board of directors of the Family Counseling Service, the Girl's Club, the Boy Scouts of America, the A ugusta Richmond County Museum, the United Way, and St. John's Towers. For many years, Mr. Stuntz was a member of the board of directors of the Sun Trust Bank of Augusta (formerly, First National Bank). He was also an active member of the Augusta Country Club and the Beech Island Agriculture Club. Mr. Stuntz served as a member of the vestry at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Augusta and was a founding member of St. Luke's Anglican Church, Augusta. Mr. Stuntz is survived by his son, Robert Paul Stuntz, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Jan Usry Stuntz of Augusta; by his daughter, Anna Laura Stuntz Bivins and son-in-law William P. Bivins of Greenville, N.C.; and by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Friday, May 27, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Westover Memorial Park, with the Rev. Daniel McAughey officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 26, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta. Mr. Stuntz was a beloved father, grandfather and friend, and a respected businessman and civic servant. He will be missed by all who knew him.
