Two dead after four-hour standoff

HARLEM - Two people are dead after a Grovetown man shot his girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself.

The deadly situation began when Jason Williams, 34, of the 500 block of Dorn Street, in Grovetown, went to the Old Union Road home of Barbara Davis on Tuesday night, Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said.

Ms. Davis, 46, and Mr. Williams had a history of domestic disputes and as Tuesday night's confrontation escalated, Ms. Davis' 15-year-old son ran from the house and called authorities.

Sometime between 8 p.m. and midnight, Mr. Williams shot Ms. Davis, once in the chest, and then shot himself, Capt. Morris said.

The Columbia County coroner was on the way to the scene at about 12:30 this morning and would determine whether autopsies would be done, Capt. Morris said.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office had dispatched both the crisis negotiating team and special response team to the standoff. The teams set up a command post at a nearby church and tried repeatedly to reach Mr. Williams by phone, hoping for a peaceful resolution, Capt. Morris said.

When the officers entered the double-wide mobile home at midnight, the two were dead.

Ms. Davis' son is now in the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services.
