Gamecocks end baseball season with victory



COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina's offense got hot Sunday afternoon as the Gamecocks beat Kentucky 12-1 to wrap up the season with Southeastern Conference three-game sweep.

South Carolina (37-19, 16-14 SEC) will be the No. 6 seed in the SEC tournament that starts next week.

Arik Hempe (2-0) struck out eight in six innings for the win. Andrew Albers (4-6) gave up seven runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings for the loss.

Kentucky (29-27, 7-22) got its first run in the first inning, but could only muster a total of six hits for the game. The Wildcats posted four errors.

The game's lone home run went to Steve Pearce, his 18th for the season. For the afternoon, Pearce was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
